Understanding Your Ford Warranty Coverage

Understanding Your Ford Warranty Coverage

When you buy a new Ford vehicle, it comes with a comprehensive warranty package designed to protect you against manufacturing defects and unexpected repair costs. Understanding what your warranty covers, how long it lasts, and what to do when you need service helps you get the full value of your purchase. Here is a clear breakdown of Ford's warranty coverage.

Bumper-to-Bumper Coverage

Ford's New Vehicle Limited Warranty covers most components of your vehicle for 3 years or 36,000 miles, whichever comes first. This is commonly called bumper-to-bumper coverage because it applies to nearly everything on the vehicle, from the audio system to the power windows to the climate control. If a covered component fails due to a defect in materials or workmanship during this period, the repair is covered at no cost to you at any authorized Ford dealer.

This warranty does not cover routine maintenance items like oil changes, brake pads, wiper blades, tires, or spark plugs. These are normal wear items that you are expected to replace as part of regular vehicle ownership. It also does not cover damage caused by accidents, misuse, modifications, or lack of maintenance.

Powertrain Warranty

Ford's Powertrain Warranty extends to 5 years or 60,000 miles, whichever comes first. This covers the engine, transmission, and drivetrain components that make your vehicle move. If your engine develops an internal defect or your transmission fails due to a manufacturing issue within this window, the repair is covered.

Specific components covered under the powertrain warranty include the engine block and internal parts, cylinder heads, timing chain, turbocharger or supercharger if equipped, transmission case and internal parts, transfer case on four-wheel-drive models, and front and rear axle assemblies. This is valuable coverage because powertrain repairs are among the most expensive you can face as a vehicle owner.

Corrosion Warranty

Ford provides a 5-year unlimited mileage warranty against perforation corrosion on body sheet metal panels. This means if rust eats through a body panel from the inside out due to a manufacturing defect, Ford will repair or replace the panel. This is separate from surface rust, which is not covered. For Michigan drivers who deal with road salt every winter, this coverage provides peace of mind that your vehicle's body is protected against the most severe form of rust damage.

Federal Emissions Warranty

Federal law requires warranty coverage on emission control components. Ford covers the catalytic converter and powertrain control module for 8 years or 80,000 miles. Other emission-related components are covered for 2 years or 24,000 miles. If your check engine light comes on due to an emissions component failure within these windows, the repair may be covered under this warranty.

Ford Protect Extended Service Plans

If you want coverage beyond the factory warranty period, Ford offers Ford Protect extended service plans. These are available for purchase before your factory warranty expires and can extend coverage on major components for up to 8 years or 150,000 miles depending on the plan you choose.

Ford Protect plans come in several tiers. The PremiumCARE plan offers the most comprehensive coverage, similar to bumper-to-bumper. The ExtraCARE plan covers a wide range of components but excludes some items like the audio system and navigation unit. The BaseCARE plan focuses on powertrain and select electrical components. All Ford Protect plans are backed by Ford Motor Company and honored at any Ford dealer nationwide.

What to Do When You Need Warranty Service

If you suspect a warranty issue, bring your vehicle to any authorized Ford dealer. You do not have to return to the dealer where you purchased the vehicle. Bring your owner's manual and any service records, as the dealer will verify coverage based on your VIN, mileage, and the in-service date of the vehicle.

There is no charge for covered warranty repairs, including parts and labor. You do not need to pay a deductible on factory warranty claims. Extended service plans may include a small deductible depending on the plan you selected at purchase.
